Card information

The ECS Fire, Emergency and Security Systems (FESS) Systems Operative card is for people working in the FESS industry as a specialist installer or maintainer of FESS systems.

The requirements to obtain a Systems Operative ECS Card have changed and you are now required to complete an ECS Fire Emergency and Security Systems (FESS) multiple-choice assessment and ECS H&S assessment to achieve the card. To support this, SfS is offering a one-day online training course that aims to upskill engineers so they are ready to take the online multiple-choice FESS assessment.

Eligibility and requirements

To be eligible for this card, applicants must meet the following criteria:

1. Successfully complete the ECS Fire, Emergency and Security Systems (FESS) assessment in the industry sector discipline you are applying for:

  • Fire

  • Fire & Emergency Lighting

  • Fire & Security

  • Security

PLUS

2. Hold a current ECS Health, Safety and Environmental Assessment.

For Scotland based users, full details of the FESS ECS card requirements can be found : https://sjib.org.uk/fess-assessment/

Each assessment consists of 30 questions across a range of topics relevant to the chosen FESS occupation to be completed in 30 minutes. Each question will require the correct answer to be selected from a choice of four possible answers given. The pass mark is 24 (80%) correctly answered questions.

A separate revision guide for each pathway is available on the SJIB website (same link as above) for free download. The guides contain sample questions and candidates are strongly encouraged to study these before undertaking the assessment. Purchasing the online training will also aid in preparation for those undertaking a pathway, with additional resources for preparations, such as sample questions, held in the "Learning Room" area of our LMS.
