If you are aged between 16 and 18 a Traineeship is an exciting way for you to develop the skills and confidence you need to take your first step towards a professional career. A Traineeship is a pre-apprenticeship programme that provides work experience, employability skills and maths and English skills development.

At Skills for Security, we can help you to gain valuable insight into a range of careers in the Fire and Security sector through our short Traineeship programme. This 6 to 16-week programme, available in the North West, will enable you to get a flavour of what it's like to be a fire and security commissioning, service, maintenance and installation engineer and become better prepared to start an apprenticeship programme.

And if engineering isn’t for you, our blended learning approach will develop your softer skills like customer service, business admin and leadership skills so you really do gain “Skills for Life”.

What you will learn:

  • Work preparation training (CV writing, interview techniques, job search and vital interpersonal skills)

  • Develop your maths and English skills

  • Four weeks of on-site work experience with a local employer

  • Knowledge of relevant industries (e.g. fire & security) and the opportunities available

  • Health and safety knowledge

  • Taster sessions in our workshops to prepare you for your work experience

  • Essential tool skills coached both on-site and in our dedicated training centres

Although we specialise in the Fire and Security engineering sector, we will provide you with the experience and skills to help you apply for any type of work. By completing a Traineeship programme, you will have demonstrated a commitment to developing yourself and a willingness to work effectively with others, which prospective employers will well receive.

How you will benefit:

  • Work on-site with established employers and get a valuable reference to support your job applications

  • Gain valuable insight into the construction sector

  • Develop your health and safety knowledge and awareness – achieve your ECS trainee card

  • Develop your communication skills and techniques to help you at the interview

  • Get maths and English support and tips on how to get your CVs noticed by employers

  • Find out about how to progress to an apprenticeship

How much does it cost?

  • SfS will pay your travel expenses and for the safety boots and overalls, you will need to work on a building site.

  • Your work experience employer will provide you with a hard hat, gloves and goggles to meet mandatory Health and Safety requirements.
